In Memorial of Kenneth Parker, son of Dean Paul Parker & Annie Parker

Kenneth Parker (December 16, 1965 - April 1, 2010)
Kenneth C. Parker age 44, of Painted Post, NY died Thursday, April 1, 2010 at home. There will be a visitation on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 11:00 am at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 808 E. Bradley, Champaign. The funeral service will begin at 12:00, noon at the church. Rev. Lundy Savage will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Champaign.

Born in Niagara Falls, NY on December 16, 1965, Ken was the son of Paul and Annie (Withers) Parker, Sr. He was a graduate of the Champaign schools and the University High School. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in computer science.

Ken started working for Corning Incorporated, Corning, NY in 1983 as a summer intern. He became a full-time employee in 1986 and was currently a Product Line Specialist in Information Technologies for Corning Incorporated.

Ken loved sports and was an avid bowler and golfer. He was outgoing and loved boating. He enjoyed socializing with friends and serving as a guest chef in local restaurants. At a young age, Ken joined the Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

He is survived by his parents of Urbana; brother, Paul Parker, Jr. of Sunnyvale, CA; many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Ken's name to the American Diabetes Association, New York State - Memorial Processing Center, P. O. Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160.

Project 500 40th Anniversary Celebration Announcements

Dear Fellow U of I Black Alumni:

Next Fall (2008) the entire University of Illinois will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Special Educational Opportunities Program – also known as Project 500. For those of you not familiar with Project 500, it was the first major attempt by the campus to provide equal educational opportunity for the families of children in Illinois.

In 1968, following the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., students and community residents pressed the university to enroll students traditionally underrepresented on campus. Ultimately, 565 newly admitted African American and Latino students began as U of I students that year. As products of Project 500 and graduates of UIUC, we too are included in that history and legacy.

On February 27, 2008, the University of Illinois, along with the Black Alumni Reunion Chicago Committee, will present a first in a series of reclamation and networking events for U of I Black Alum. This celebration will take place from 6-8pm at the DuSable Museum.
